Co-Create is a product creation programme for Lush staff, aiming to promote diversity, inclusion, equity and belonging by lifting up authentic stories from respective communities. Co-creators Jailene Mandujano and Jesus Antonio Ballinas share their inspiration for this Día de Muertos product:
“Concha is a type of sweet bread, dating back to origins in Mexico but since then, has been recognized in other Spanish speaking countries. Our people tend to use either Conchas or Pan de Muerto as a way to honour those who have passed. The pattern that these sweet breads have looks like shells and the Spanish word for shell is concha.”
For Jesus Antonio Ballinas, Conchas are especially sentimental, telling us how “all my aunts know how to make Conchas from my late grandmother. Since her passing, our family has made it a goal to put out our own fresh Conchas on the ofrenda when we set it up.”
